                                                   Childhood obesity

“Hi kid, how come you are so fat?” to some people this sounds like a funny question, but maybe the girl or boy has come running home in tears after hearing that kinds of questions. How do you feel about this?  Recent data indicates that there has been a significant increase in overweight in children (4~12 years of age) during 1986~2008(Raymond 213). It highlights the facts that not only are children in the age groups getting fatter; they are getting fatter faster than ever before. So it is easy for people to associate with childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity means “excessive body fat” (Rowland 130). It also means the fat-storing ability is hardly appropriate for children, and it causes fat deposition (Rowland 131). And most overweight children may become overweight adults; they are more in danger to a variety of diseases and further social discrimination. That tells us to recognize how important it is to keep children’s weight at the right level (Clinton 18).

Today, America’s childhood obesity situation is in crisis. 11% percent of children in the United States are “overweight” or “obese” (Hayman 215). From 2000 to 2008, there was more than 4 percent increase of youth in the heaviest range (Dalton 20). Specifically, data from the most recent national health and nutrition examination survey (NHANES 3) shows that the number of overweight children in the U.S. has increased among all age, race and sex groups since the NHANES 2 (Hayman 214). For the growing number of overweight children, the chance of becoming obese is greater than ever before. Above all, prevalence and trend data show that the urgent need for public and government is to prevent the continuing epidemic of overweight children and youth in the U.S (Dalton 20).

If people want to help children to solve the obesity problem, first they should know why he or she is overweight. There are some common reasons for this. The first reason is parents. As we know, overweight runs in family, it must a hereditary problem. 75% percent of the instances in which parents are overweight, the children are overweight (Wolff 16). Only 9% of the cases in which neither of the parents are overweight, are the kids overweight (Dalton 60). The second reason is misinformation about food. Of all the media, TV has the strongest effect on children’s behavior. Sometimes, children choose the food which is promoted by TV because it is fun, it is sweet or it is the way to get a prize rather than because it is necessary for good health (Wolff 20). The third reason is family behavior. Family behaviors undoubtedly contribute to childhood obesity, because parents always pass on their beliefs and habits to their children. For example, parents prefer to eat meat rather than vegetables. It could be easily for children to become overweight. In short those are three major reasons why the children become overweight (Dalton 94).

How to prevent our children from being overweight is also an important matter. There are three methods for children to prevent obesity. The first method is forming a good eating behavior. Obesity is attributed to both sharing genes and eating behaviors. If children form a good eating behavior, like eating more vegetables than fast-food, it will strongly decrease the risk of childhood obesity (Hayman 221). The second method is doing some physical activities. Extensive experience has demonstrated that physical activities can be effective in reducing the fat load, increasing cardiovascular efficiency, allowing more economical locomotion or decreasing the oxygen cost of ventilation (Hayman 224). Third method is making children get enough sleep. Children from seven to eighteen need at least nine hours of sleep at night. Younger children need more. If the children get enough sleep, they will have enough energy to do some physical activities and keep healthy. And a recent study indicates that “less sleep, more body fat” (Dalton 131). So knowing those skills will help both children and their parents.

There are three important prevention periods: fetal period, infancy period and childhood period. For people to know this three kinds of periods will give children a lot of help. In the fetal period, the first important thing is prevent the fetus being overweight. If a pregnant woman’s weight increases too fast, it will cause the baby to be overweight. So it will increase the chance of obesity for this baby in the future. Therefore, a pregnant woman should do some appropriate activities and have regular physical examination (Smith 125). In the infancy period, experts encourage breast feeding. Research indicates that the probability of the obesity occurred in the children who were breastfed much less than the children who were artificial. The reason may be that the breast children can be better controlled in the intake of meals and the intervals, which avoid the excessive intake of calorie (Dele 56). In the childhood period, parents should develop their children’s good eating habits and exercise habits. In addition, parents should help the children to measure their weight regularly and adjust it when there is an indication that the children’s weight is rising too fast (Dele 58).

Obesity is an important problem in both and medicine and public health. If people don’t take care and treat the overweight children in time, it means these children will have a high risk of some diseases when they become adults. There are 3 common ways to treat these overweight children. The first way is exercise therapy; being active will not only make children lose weight but also make them stronger. And exercise therapy and diet therapy need to match each other. Only if combined with them, the exercise therapy will have a significant result (Berg 74). The second way is psychotherapy. This kind of therapy needs parents’ help. Parents should tell children the correct eating behavior, encourage them to take part in sports and most importantly, encourage children to overcome inferiority complex. Sometimes, the psychotherapy is more efficient than diet therapy and drug therapy (Berg 76). The third way is drug therapy. If exercise therapy and psychotherapy both fail, parents should think about drug therapy. This kind of treatment should be evaluated by the physician. The children follow the physician’s request and take medicines. But some experts do not recommend this method (Jana 150). They prefer the first two than the last. So take good care of your children and treat them in time.

Good behavior is related to weight control. And the following behaviors hold the key to losing weight and developing an adequate, sensible diet. The first important behavior is eating a good breakfast (Wolff 87). In many ways, breakfast is the most important meal of the whole day. It provides your body with fuel when a child most likely to need it. The second behavior is controlling snacks, controlling of snacks is essential for children. Not only do they contain loads of empty calories, but also blunt your child’s appetite, so that children are less willing to eat nutritious food which you serve at the meal-times (Wolff 58). The third behavior is eating slowly. Eating slowly, being aware of the food, savoring its taste, texture, and aroma are critically important in restoring the act of eating to a manageable physical function (Wolff 87). The fourth behavior is getting enough exercise. It has some benefits: it helps muscle tone, it impose general health, and it helps the self-image of the child who’s gotten used to seeing himself or herself as a sluggish, lump of flesh (Wolff 58).

Every movement, every activity burns up calories. The more vigorous the activity, the more calories consumed. Calorie reduction is the only practical and effective means of losing weight. There are a few of most effective and least burdensome exercises. The first is running; running offers several advantages as a way for those of all ages to enjoy regular exercise and improve physical fitness. Therefore, running is particularly valuable for its preventive health effects of controlling weight and maintaining cardiovascular fitness (Rowland 279). The second is walking. This is one of the best all-around; no stress exercises because it helps the heart, lungs and legs to gain strength. So, let it become a habit (Wolff 49). The third is bicycling, like walking, it is a balanced exercise. Bicycling is also a good family activity. It does not cost much to outfit Mom and Dad with a couple of second hand bikes, setting the stage for nightly cycle tours or weekend bike trips (Wolff 50). The fourth is sports. Children should develop an interest in non team sports. These sports allow your child to play with others at his or her own level of ability and they are easier to carry on into adulthood. They include tennis, badminton, water-skiing and snow-skiing (Wolff 52). Above all, a good exercise program will help the slimming process and have health payoffs.

With the knowledge about why children are overweight, the importance of good nutrition and exercise, and the most important behaviors related to eating and weight, people can design a program to fit a child. The first step is record your children’s weight. Write down your child’s weight on the first day. Each following day put a dot on the position matching the day of the week and the amount of weight your child has gained or lost (Wolff 124). The second step is to decide on a weight goal for your child. Do not try to transform a very fat child into a very thin one-settle for an average weight (Wolff 125). The third step is choosing the first behavior to change. There are many reasons for children overweight, and your child doesn’t need correct his or her bad behaviors all at once. So, parents should choose one behavior to change. Concentrating on that one for two weeks and then add a second (Wolff 131). The last step is continuing all the steps until all the behaviors are changed. Continue on the schedule, do not try to speed it up, be sure to keep on weighing your child and writing it in the calendar forms (Wolff 140). In short, if you follow through with your program, you can be sure that “happy day” will arrive.

Improving childhood health is still far from the top of the long wish list of schools. If schools want to become part of the solution and make obesity prevention a high priority, they should take several actions. The first action is ceasing junk food on campus and offering healthier alternatives. Now, many schools have banned junk food, nourishing snacks should be available at reasonable providing. And this action has won lots of parents’ praise has been effective (Dalton 202). The second action is overhauling the school lunch problem to making it more appetizing, nutritional, and popular. Schools provide food which are nutritious and popular with students, such as, vegetable wraps, tasty grilled chicken, soy burgers, salads and fruit juice (Dalton 204). The third action is reinstating daily recess and physical education, and promoting physical activity throughout the day. A variety of activities at school could be providing for all children. This may help them from falling asleep in the classroom or quell the urge to reach for a caffeinated soft drink (Dalton 206).

Today, childhood obesity has become one of the most serious problems in the world. Parents, schools, community and society all should try their best to care about the overweight children from all aspects. With theirs help I believe these children will be moving closer to the day when they no longer have to endure the painful question, “ hi kid, how come you are so fat?”

comparing interview three to two and one

The time is fast, I have already finished three interviews. The second interview is better than the first interview, and the third is better than the second interview, so the third interview is the best interview on this semester. I had interviewed three different country cultures. The first interview country person is Korea, the second one is Saudi Arabia and the third one is American. I changed different cultures between those three interviews. I chose three different ways to ask them questions because they are different country people. I started to review each question, and consider which two questions can be connected naturally because I want to seriate all questions that make interviewee feel comfortable to be asked. In addition, I estimate the time that to be used in interview. I thought the time of interview can’t be very short, so I need to prepare counter plan. Their cultures are new for me to record. And also, I have finished preparing the entire fourteen questions in class. Before the interview, I have printed two pages of questions. One is for me, the other one is for interviewee. On my opinion, I record notes what my successful thing is. I also used my cell phone to record the entire interview. I didn’t spend much time on transcribe notes because I don’t want the interviewee to wait for me. I just write down some key words, so I just spent one and half hours to transcribe the recorded audio portion. I think that steps are the best ways to interview. Those three interviews what I use the same ways to do, and Three interviews just have different information. I am satisfied my interview very much. Maybe I will improve better on my next interview.

China

Report of China

The People’s Republic of China is second-largest country by land area in the world, and it is the most populous country. Beijing is the capital of China. "The People's Republic of China is a single-party state governed by the Communist Party of China." There have over 22provinces, five autonomous regions, four directly controlled municipalities and two mostly self-governing special administrative regions in China. China's landscape is vast and diverse, with forest steppes  and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts occupying the arid north and northwest near Mongolia and Central Asia, and subtropical forests being prevalent in the wetter south near Southeast Asia". Yellow River is the most famous in China because yellow river is Chinese Mother River and it gives Chinese people life. “China's political system was based on hereditary monarchies, known as dynasties, beginning with the semi-mythological Xia of the Yellow River basin (approx. 2000 BC) and ending with the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912”. China is the wonderful and grateful country in the world, and China will develop better and better in the world.

My Third Interview

My Third Interview
Interviewer: Yue Wang
Interviewee: John

Preparation of interview
My preparation for the third interview looks similar because I have finished preparing the entire fourteen questions in class. Before the interview, I have printed two pages of questions. One is for me, the other one is for interviewee. Although the handouts have been used for last interviewee, I didn’t write down anything on handouts and it still looks new. I started to review each question, and consider which two questions can be connected naturally because I want to seriate all questions that make interviewee feel comfortable to be asked. In addition, I estimate the time that to be used in interview. I thought the time of interview can’t be very short, so I need to prepare counter plan. I also prepared some another questions about personal life. Actually, my questions for the interview are full enough, and the time for the interview is to be calculated accurately. John is American who was found from SCSU. He is a  nice person who help me to finish my interview.

Interview report
My third interviewee is John who comes from America. He is a student in SCSU. We met each other in library’s café shop on 2pm 1st April. Before I went there on time, I bought some his favorite Ice cream from DQ. It should make interviewee feel relax like staying home. Then we found a good place without noisy to take interview. Firstly, I gave him a list of questions for preview. In my opinion, preview for the question is really possible because it makes interviewee feel concrete and exercisable for the following interview. I also asked him “Are there some questions that can’t be asked in this list of questions”? He told me he felt enjoyed and relaxed about the interview. Secondly, I started from some simple and random questions. I thought this should make interviewee feel comfortable. Thirdly, I also used my cell phone to record the entire interview. I didn’t spend much time on transcribe notes because I don’t want the interviewee to wait for me. I just write down some key words.

"The land area of the contiguous United States is approximately 1,900 million acres (7,700,000 km2). Alaska, separated from the contiguous United States by Canada, is the largest state at 365 million acres (1,480,000 km2). Hawaii, occupying an archipelago in the central Pacific, southwest of North America, has just over 4 million acres (16,000 km2). The United States is the world's third or fourth largest nation by total area (land and water), ranking behind Russia and Canada and just above or below China. The ranking varies depending on how two territories disputed by China and India are counted and how the total size of the United States is measured: calculations range from 3,676,486 square miles (9,522,055 km2 ) to 3,717,813 square miles (9,629,091 km2) to 3,794,101 square miles (9,826,676 km2). Including only land area, the United States is third in size behind Russia and China, just ahead of Canada. "

" American public education is operated by state and local governments, regulated by the United States Department of Education through restrictions on federal grants. Children are required in most states to attend school from the age of six or seven until they turn eighteen; some states allow students to leave school at sixteen or seventeen. About 12% of children are enrolled in parochial or nonsectarian private schools. Just over 2% of children are homeschooled.
The United States has many competitive private and public institution of higher education. According to prominent international rankings, 13 or 15 American colleges and universities are ranked among the top 20 in the world. There are also local community colleges with generally more open admission policies, shorter academic programs, and lower tuition. Of Americans twenty-five and older, 84.6% graduated from high school, 52.6% attended some college, 27.2% earned a bachelor's degree, and 9.6% earned graduate degrees. The basic literacy rate is approximately 99%. The United Nations assigns the United States an Education Index of 0.97, tying it for 12th in the world."
